Make Something Beautiful Before You Are Dead

For years, I’ve thought “I should really put pictures of my quilts online.” This dates back to the days of a digital camera – and I did painstakingly load pictures from it onto my websites at the time. But the poor light in my early apartments and the technology available and the sheer scale of the project always led to my abandoning the effort or even failing to begin.

But I have finally created a quilts section for this site! Not only have my houses in central PA had good places where I can photograph the quilts, I’ve updated my phones enough to get decent captures. I’ve also started saving alt text descriptions into text files that I store with photos of my quilts – so while I’ll have a ton of work to do, I’m at least off to a better start than I might be.

The module is somewhat minimalist, capturing a few key details about the quilts: years of construction, construction technique, and a narrative description. Then there are images with rich alt text. I may choose to add commentary on some of the images, but many posts will be pretty simple. I anticipate that I may have to tweak a few more things around styling. We’ll see.

The section isn’t fully populated yet, but I have several dozen quilts sorted into folders, awaiting uploads. It’s all very ad-hoc. Sometimes the color is a little off. Sometimes I didn’t take enough pictures of the quilts before they left and am only left with one or two. Occasionally, I don’t even remember where it went. But, big and small, they’re an overview of the many creative projects I’ve completed. Most are quilts but a few are quilt-adjacent. If they use the same techniques, I may just throw them in too (vs. my handmade clothing).
