[This text file contains the text of the Reticule Revival pattern zine. Line breaks and formatting are retained. Bracketed additions describe images or other features of the zine, such as pages or line breaks. The zine is composed of a single front page folded into quarters: front, inside left, inside right, and back, then, upon unfolding, the interior contains a single page pattern. The zine is composed of cutouts of text pasted to two patterned fabrics, a dark fabric with lighter polkadots of three shades and various sizes for the four folded pages and a light fabric with darker flowers for the interior pattern. It is intended to be viewed in black and white, although a color copy is provided for complex printing. The light fabric has some minor fraying on one side.] [The ordering of this pattern is as it is intended to be used, front, interior left, interior right, pattern page, back] [front page exterior, folded] Reticule Revival ~ a Pattern ~ [cover figure: a hand-drawn sketch of an open bag measuring 4.5" wide and just under 7" high (proportionally), with a turned up flap which might cover the front and a circular wrist strap in the side. This is drawn in black and white but is colorized on printed versions of the zine. The bag is of a size which could hold a ] What is a reticule? A small purse with a strap which affixes to your wrist. An easy way to carry your phone. A substitute pocket! [interior left] [a diagram of 5 pieces to be cut, drawn and labeled A - E: A (front) - 4.5" x 7.25" B (back) - 4.5" x 10" C (bottom) - 4.5" x 1.5" D (side) (2x) - 1.5" x 7.25" E (strap) - 1.75" x 10" ] Cutting: Reticule, A-E (D is cut twice) Lining, A-D (D is cut twice) Fusible interfacing, A & B Seam allowance: 0.25" (1/4") If creating a pieced exterior as described next, reticule A & B may be cut from a plain, supportive fabric. [interior right] [hand-lettered inserted header "Optional"] Constructing a layered top & bottom You'll need strips 4.5" wide & minimum 0.75" high, enough to cover front and back pieces as described below (including seams). Place first strip at one end of supportive fabric, right side up. Place next strip right-side down on it, edge meeting (as shown below). Stitch 0.25" from edge. Flip second strip open right side up. Press seam down, lay third strip along its unsewn edge. Sew seam. Continue until each side is covered. [Illustration: Showing piece A with a strip of fabric laid down cover it from side to side. A seam 0.25" from the bottom of the strip indicates that this is actually a second strip layered on a first one. Arced arrows show that it should be folded open. The next figures each have more strips layered on top of previous strips and show strips of different widths covering the bottom fabric, with the final strip always being sewed down and about to be unfolded. ] [pattern page] (1) Fuse interfacing to wrong sides of Reticule A & B following interfacing instructions. (2a) Sew Reticule front A & bottom C, back B & bottom C together, each right sides together. [Illustration: a very long rectangle with lines on it indicating seams and notes indicating that it's actually composed of piece A, piece C, and piece B] (2b) Fold front & back upwards, right sides inward. Place Reticule side pieces D, right sides in, between front & back. Begin sewing seams 0.5" up from the bottom, sew each side to from & back. Sew side bottom edges to bottom edges. Close last 0.5" of side seams. You may wish to use needle and thread if using machine sewing. [Illustration: an illustration of the steps described above. It labels the various pieces in their places. What is important about this illustration is that it conveys that the bag is formed of a shorter front half, a longer back half, a bottom half sewn in place, and sides which come to the height of the front half, while some of the back half remains free.] (3) Repeat steps 2a & 2b for Lining. (4) (a)fold strap edges 0.25" in and press. (b)Then fold down the middle and top-stitch along edge. (c)Make into a loop and baste to right side of the reticule, near top. [Illustration of a strip with edges folded in on both sides as described in 4a] [Illustration of a strip folded in half with top-stitching illustrated along the edge as described in 4b] [Illustration of a strip bent in half to form a loop and then attached to the top side edge on one side of the reticule] (5) place lining inside reticule, right sides together. Ensure strap ends protrude above seam. Sew 0.25" seam along top edges, leaving a gap as shown. [Illustration describing what's above, showing that the gap should be along one side of the back part (not the side part, but one section of the nearly-3 additional inches of top) perhaps the gap takes up 1.75 of those inches and is left unstitched whereas the rest is illlustrated by stitches] (6) turn so reticule is right-side out and lining is inside. Top-stitch close to edge, folding in and including the section where gap was left. [Illustration similar to above but now indicating that the fabric is turned right-side out and topstitching occurrs around the entire edge of the fabric, including the gap. Also, the strap hangs on one side] (7) Add bottom of snap to front of reticule and top of snap to back lining of reticule as shown. [Illustration of a snap placed so that the top inside part of the reticule will fold down and snap to the front of the reticule.] [back] [hand-lettered] Why reticule? I made a cute wrist bag for my phone and ID card. My coworker pointed out I'd revived the reticule! - RKT 2017 [hand-lettered] Reticule Revival Ruth Tillman Uncopyright 2017 ruthtillman.com/patterns
